South Evanston Yellow Line Station

From its original opening in 1925 until 1948, the CTA Yellow Line (also known as the Skokie Swift) had several stops in Evanston. After major changes in the mid-20th century to convert the service into a commuter shuttle, intermediate stations at Dodge, Asbury, and Ridge had their platforms and entrance buildings boarded up and eventually dismantled.

Reopening a CTA station in one of these locations would enhance access to Ascension Saint Francis Hospital, Levy Senior Center, the Howard St business district, and numerous residential neighborhoods currently underserved by transit. Connections would also be provided to several local bus routes.

As recently as 2012, the City of Evanston conducted initial feasibility studies and community engagement finding significant economic benefits and resident support for a new stop.

With the completion of a new infill station along the Yellow Line at Oakton St in Downtown Skokie, it is time for Evanston to build a station of its own. We must re-launch the planning process for a Yellow Line station in South Evanston, bringing access to this rail service back to nearby residents in the 8th and 9th Wards for the first time in nearly 80 years.

State legislation recently passed in late 2025 provides a financial commitment to expanding and strengthening transit service in Northern Illinois, including infill stations on existing lines. A station in South Evanston is a prime candidate and should be one of the first improvements considered utilizing this newly established funding.
