From 1925 until 1948 the CTA Yellow Line had several stops in Evanston at Dodge, Asbury, and Ridge. Unfortunately, these stations were subsequently boarded up and eventually dismantled.

Reopening a CTA station in one or more of these locations would reconnect South Evanston to rail transit, and enhance access to Ascension Saint Francis Hospital, Levy Senior Center, the Howard St business district, and several local bus routes.

As recently as 2012, the City of Evanston conducted initial feasibility studies and community engagement finding significant economic benefits and resident support for a new stop.

Both the Envision Evanston 2045 Comprehensive Plan and the Environmental Equity Investigation, adopted by Evanston City Council, include goals of a new Yellow Line station.

The 2025 Cook County Rail Infill station survey had a new Yellow Line station in Evanston ranked by the general public as one of the top 5 most-needed new station locations.

The Village of Skokie constructed a new station along its section of the Yellow Line at Oakton in 2012, providing a direct example of what Evanston can do.

The time is right for re-launching the planning process to study a new station in Evanston. State legislation recently passed in late 2025 established NITA (Northern Illinois Transit Authority), providing additional coordination/planning and significant funding for expanding transit service in our region, including infill stations on existing lines.

South Evanston is a prime candidate for new stations, bringing access to rail service back to nearby residents in the 8th and 9th Wards for the first time in nearly 80 years.
