South Lakefront Trail Extension
A southern extension of Evanston’s Lakefront Trail along Sheridan Road from Main Street to Calvary Cemetery is a critical missing link in our park and active transportation network.
The existing multi-use path ends at Lee Street, providing no safe route for all ages and abilities to walk or cycle south to Clark Square Park, Garden Park, South Blvd Beach, and the Eastlake Terrace Greenway in Rogers Park.
A new multi-use trail, utilizing mostly existing gravel paths on the east side of Sheridan Road and Sheridan Square, will improve safe access to the lakefront and minimize existing conflicting between all modes. Currently, cyclists must either ride in mixed traffic with cars, or utilize sidewalks endangering pedestrians, particularly dangerous on Sheridan near Calvary Cemetery.
Additional improvements along the Sheridan Road corridor could include pedestrian crossing enhancements to facilitate safer access to the new walking and cycling route, which would also serve to slow traffic in this area which sees significant speeding.
