EVANSTON IS GETTING A NEW BIKE PLAN
Our existing bike infrastructure is disconnected and unsafe. Planned improvements have been ignored, watered down, or delayed for years.
The 2026 Bike Plan Update is a generational opportunity for Evanston to get a connected, low-stress network that residents of all ages and abilities can use as a safe, daily transportation option.
Let’s advance a strong, shared vision for better biking and safer streets in our community:
#1 PRIORITIZE PROTECTED LANES ALONG MAJOR STREETS
Create dedicated space for bikes on our busiest and most dangerous corridors for direct, intuitive routes linking schools, shops, and transit hubs.
#2 REINFORCE EXISTING LANES TO INCREASE SAFETY
Add barriers and bus boarding/corner islands along Church St, Davis St, and Dodge Ave to reduce conflicts between bikes and vehicles.
#3 CREATE TRAFFIC CALMED NEIGHBORHOODS
Enhance lower-traffic streets with raised crosswalks, curb bump-outs, reduced speed
limits, and shared/painted bike lane markings.
#4 IMPROVE REGIONAL TRAIL CONNECTIVITY
Connect to the Old Orchard and Green Bay Trails, and study the Channel Trail extension. Enhance bridge/road crossings along the Channel Trail.
#5 MAKE A COMMITMENT TO
IMPLEMENTATION
Complete the plan’s recommended improvements by 2036, leveraging existing resurfacing and capital projects to minimize cost and construction.
